“Ceci tuera cela” . Is a magnificent chapter from Notre Dame de Paris, Hugo describes perfectly the passing of the civilization of Architecture to the civilization of Writing. He claimed that the people before the diffusion of press, talked for centuries about their buildings. Press ended this secular dialogue, giving us a freedom of speech unimaginable years back thanks to the lightness, the easy reproduction and the transportability of books. Now this concept can be applied to press being overtaken by Internet: the atoms of paper against the electrons of the bit.
Meanwhile we have forgotten what architecture really is, generating urban monsters.
